Global History of Fashion
Andrew P. Griebeler, Mira Xenia Schwerda
Description from DukeHub
You are what you wear. Whether it is silk from Nanjing, colonial paisley cottons, Susan Sontag's leather culture, Kate Moss's heroin chic, or contemporary athleisure, fashion has always had cultural, political, and social significance. This introductory lecture course surveys the global history of fashion from the stone age to now. After introducing students to principal materials and techniques, the class proceeds with a series of case studies on the interconnected histories of artistic, material and visual culture, design, photography, politics and the environment. The final part of the class will consider the future of fashion.
