Surrealisms Across Borders: Arts, Politics, and Global Encounters
Anne-Gaelle Saliot
Description from DukeHub
What happens when dreams become instruments of artistic and political revolution? Moving beyond its emergence in 1920s Paris, this course explores Surrealism across Europe, the Caribbean, the Americas, Africa, and Asia. Through literature, visual art, photography, film, and performance, we examine how women, exiled artists, and colonial and postcolonial creators reinvented the movement. Topics include dreams and desire, myth and the unconscious, love and sexuality, madness and revolt, colonialism and emancipation, fascism and exile. Discover how Surrealists sought not only to make new art, but to reimagine freedom, politics, and life itself. Taught in English, with an optional French-language preceptorial.
