Avant-Garde/Experimental Cinema
Vladimir Lukin
Description from DukeHub
This course introduces students to the history of avant-garde and experimental cinema as an alternative to the dominant conventions of Hollywood storytelling and visuality, conventions that today shape not only mainstream film but also television, YouTube, and short-form platforms such as TikTok and Instagram. We will trace the development of experimental filmmaking from the silent era (including Soviet montage, French surrealism, and German expressionism) through the postwar French New Wave, Third Cinema, American independent filmmaking, structural film, feminist cinema, found-footage practices, and recent experiments in digital cinema.
